Cross-Country Skiing

Cross Country Ski in Rice Lake, WIRice Lake is a cross-country skiing paradise. Some of the best trail systems in Wisconsin are within a short drive of downtown Rice Lake. Well-designed and expertly groomed, the area’s ski trails offer something for every skier, from beginner to expert. Choose from these area trail systems:

Barron Area Nordic Trails – 6km

This is a mixed trail system with both forested & open trails. It goes through Rockman’s Woods located behind the Barron High School. During the winter this trail starts at the High School parking lot. Along with snowshoe trails the BANTA Trails will be adding a lighted section for the 2010-2011 season. This trail is groomed for both classical & skate techniques.

Blue Hills Trail System – 35 kilometers

This is one of the best cross-country ski trail systems in Wisconsin. Both skating and classical style skiing are accommodated, with trails available for every ability level. From Rice Lake, head east on Highway C (Sawyer Street) 10 miles to the Barron-Rusk County Line where Barron County Highway C becomes Rusk County Highway O. Continue on Highway O another 10 miles to Fire Lane Road. Head north on Fire Lane Road 2 ½ miles. Get map and more information.

Nordic Woods Trail – 11 kilometers

This groomed cross-country ski trail is suitable for beginner and intermediate level skiers. You’ll find sections groomed for both classical and skating style skiing. From Rice Lake head east on Highway 48 to County M. Turn left, go to Highway B (four-way stop). Turn right on County B and continue to trail. Get map and learn more.

Rice Lake Nordic Trails – 3 Km

This is a flat trail system located inside of Rice Lake at the UWBC Campus grounds. It consists of 2 loops, the ultimate for beginners as well as with
street lights it allows night skiing for all levels. The trailhead is located at the UWBC North parking lot (east end away from the school) The

Timberland Hills Trail – 24 kilometers

Trail system offers advanced skier loops as well as beginner and intermediate loops. From Rice Lake, take Hwy 48 to Cumberland, then head north on Hwy 63 and then west on Highway H. Don’t miss the 2.5 kilometer lighted ski trail located 1½ miles south of the main Timberland Hills Ski Area on Highway H. Get map and learn more.
